How to Start a Beauty and Makeup Blog
Starting a beauty blog can be intimidating. There are tons of great blogs out there with beautiful photos  and great content. Some bloggers have even been going at it for what feels like zillions of years! All of this might make you think that you have nothing new to offer. But the truth is, none of that’s important. What matters is that you want to blog, and that you’re passionate about it. If you enjoy what you do, then your blog will be great and you’ll have a lot of fun running it.

But you’re here because you’ve already decided you want to know how to start your own beauty blog, right? I’ll take you through all the steps you’ll need to set up your blog, and some tips on how to make it great from the start.

Setting up your beauty blog: Hosting and domain name

If you’ve never put together a blog or a any kind of  website, just getting set up can be one of the most difficult parts. You might be tempted to just throw together a blog through a service like blogger, but I’d strongly recommend against this.

If you want to have full control over customizing your blog, and even consider monetizing in the future, you should get your own web hosting and a domain name. My top choice would be Bluehost.

Not only does Bluehost have some of the cheapest plans ($3.95/month. I bet your daily coffee costs more than that) for hosting a site, they give you a free domain name and make it really easy to set up WordPress. WordPress is hands down the most popular blogging platform on the web. Because of this, there are thousands of resources on the internet that will help you customize your blog and make it truly unique.

To put it in simple terms, your domain name will be your site’s address (ex: brilliantbrushes.com) and your hosting will give your blog a place to live. WordPress will make it easy to focus on quickly and easily posting articles and making your blog look great.

Pick a plan

Once you’re on the BlueHost site all you have to do is click “get started now.” This will take you to the page to pick your plan. I suggest the plus plan because it gives you lots of unlimited space, but it’s really up to you. Having unlimited space means that you’ll be able to post without worrying. Your site will also be better prepared in case of high traffic. Look over the features of each plan and decide which one works the best for you.

Once that’s done, you’ll be taken to the domain selection page. Now it’s time to pick a name. Yikes!

Picking a beauty blog name

This is tough because this is the name your blog will be stuck with unless you decide to rebrand in the future. At this point it’s a good idea to decide exactly what your blog will focus on. Are you blogging about everything beauty? Are you more focused on vegan makeup products? Is your blog just about hair care?

When you know what you want to blog about, take a moment to just brainstorm different words. Mix and match them together. Eventually something will sound good! Remember to have fun with it. You’ll find that a lot of domain names will already be taken, even some of the weirder names you’ve come up with, so have a nice long list so that you can go through them until you find one that’s available.

Finishing up

After you’ve settled on a name (it took you 3 hours, didn’t it? I don’t blame you), you can finish up purchasing your hosting plan. Bluehost will give you the option of adding some extras to your plan. You don’t need these, but if any of them sound interesting you can hit more information underneath each feature to learn more.

Install WordPress

This part is surprisingly easy and painless. Sign in to your sparkly new Bluehost account. Or set up your plan if you still haven’t yet by clicking here! At the top of the page, you’ll see a link to your cpanel. This page will have a link to set up WordPress with a simple installation.

The installation is very straightforward. Just hit start, select your domain name, and then enter some info for your blog. You can log into your brand new blog by going to www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin. www.yourdomain.com should be replaced with whatever domain your chose for your beauty blog.

That’s it! You’re logged into your blog! Seeing the WordPress dashboard for the first time can be pretty intimidating, so take a moment to click around and familiarize yourself with where everything is. Eventually, after blogging for a while, it’ll feel like home.

Make your beauty blog beautiful

On the WordPress sidebar you’ll see a link for appearance. Clicking this will bring you to the themes page. At the top of that page, you’ll see a button that says “add new”.  Click this to go to the themes explore page, where you can browse through tons of different designs for your site.

If you can’t find anything you like there(which is highly doubtful) just doing a search for free WordPress themes in google should bring up tons of lists to look at. There are even premium themed sites like ThemeForest where you can pay for professional looking blog themes. In the end, it’s really up to you.

What should my Beauty blog be about?

So you set up your blog. now what? Well, your blog could really be about anything you want.

If you have a great camera, and you like to show yourself off, don’t be afraid to make your blog about your different looks. Nowadays, smartphone cameras are so good, you really don’t need anything fancy to take great shots for your posts.

If you’re a bit more shy, that’s fine, you could focus on reviewing products or just discussing trends and news that interests you. You could even get creative and take your photos so that they’re somewhat anonymous, only showing an image of your lips if you’re showing off a cool new lip color.

Pick a niche. If you feel really overwhelmed, start small. What’s your favorite makeup product? Maybe you want your blog to just focus on nail polish. Maybe you’re crazy about finding dupes at the drugstore. Your blog is your oyster! Or something like that. This is another great time to sit and brainstorm all the things you’d like to talk about. Keeping a list is a good way to make sure you never run out of post ideas.

If you want your site to have pretty pictures, there’s a lot of free, cool apps you can use to make incredible graphics or edit the photos you take.

Canva is my absolute favorite for making banners or anything really. This app makes it so easy to put together beautiful images that you can use as headers for your posts. The app provides all the assets you need to put together graphics and it’s free. You don’t even have to be a graphic designer. Seriously check it out, it’ll blow your mind.

If you can’t afford something like Photoshop for editing photos, try out Pixlr. It’s a free in browser photo editing program that works a lot like Photoshop. You can use it to crop, resize, or do interesting effects to your photos.

Now you know how to start a makeup blog! As you can see, it’s pretty darn easy to set everything up using a service like Bluehost and taking advantage of all the free tools available online.

If you really love the topic you are blogging about, post ideas should come easily. If not, there’s no harm browsing around the web to get inspired. Follow other great beauty bloggers and take note of the things you like about their blog. Go on Pinterest and you’ll be swimming in post inspiration for days.

But most importantly. Have a blast and love what you do!
