Applying Foundation: Sponges or Brushes?

When it comes to applying your foundation to your face, either a sponge or a brush can be used. They’ll both get the job done, but which does the job better?

The biggest pro of using a sponge is that they are ultra inexpensive, you can buy tons of sponges, use them and get rid of them. This eliminates the entire process of having to clean a brush, however if you’re using other makeup brushes, this isn’t really a big perk anyway. Sponges come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes so they are incredibly versatile. You can also use a sponge both wet and dry.

There are a lot of cons to using a sponge though, after first use, a sponge begins to collect bacteria and they will need to be disposed of. Some women may choose to use their sponges multiple times, but this can lead to breakouts. Because sponges are so absorbent, you’re bound to use up a lot more product, which can be pretty wasteful, and really costly. Add on the cost of replacing your sponges all the time and you’ll end up spending more money than you saved with your initial sponge purchase.

Brushes on the other hand are a long term investment. If you spend a lot of money on a good brush, that brush is going to be with you for years, as long as you continue to care for it. With a brush there is a lot less waste because you are only using as much product as you need, rather than absorbing tons of it at once. There are tons of different brushes to choose from allowing you to apply foundation in hard to reach places, and try a lot of different techniques. They also allow you to blend in such a way that you have a very natural finish at the end.

There aren’t a lot of cons when it comes to using brushes, the biggest downside is maintenance. If you invest in a brush, you want to make sure that you take care of it and keep it clean to extend the life. You also don’t want to over-clean your brush and risk losing bristles and the brush shape. It can be a delicate balance.

However, when it comes down to it, brushes are generally far superior for applying foundation to sponges. Brushes will give you great application and blending of your foundation. They’re perfect for those who only want to use small amounts of foundation too. Investing is the hard part, but once you purchase a good foundation brush, you’ll be glad you did. If you’re still really curious about blending with a sponge, a beauty blender sponge is a great alternative to the usual ones.
